Paris Deco Off 2017 Highlights

London

Having previously worked across several luxury sectors; from the world of watch & jewellery to the business of yachting, taking various detours via high-end property and even some time in the beauty and cosmetics industry – I have been part of many customer and trade shows – on both sides of the fence. There has been a consistent ‘product-design thread’ running through each, and I am proud to now be part of the Porta Romana family – heading up the marketing function.

However, nothing that I have experienced to date even comes close to the captivating, creative whirlwind that is Paris Deco Off, a place where incredible stories are told.

It was just over a week ago when I arrived in the beautiful, charming city of Paris, thrilled to be getting the chance to discover a very special showcase of craftsmanship, artisanal design and innovation from over 120 brands – as well as the visionaries behind what makes this event so utterly unique.

I took a taxi straight to the Porta Romana pop-up gallery on rue de l’Échaudé, situated in the Latin Quarter, in the heart of Saint-Germain-des Prés. It was clear that the show was already in full-swing with the signature lanterns adorning the streets, and a vibrant sea of colour everywhere. Galerie Andre and Catherine Hug had been transformed into something remarkable.

The intricate window display, so carefully created by our set-up team, perfectly captured the new collection – Cosmos – representing mankind’s eternal wonder of the universe. Visitors and passers-by could not help but stop and be drawn-in by such a curiously inventive concept. The interior had also been laid out to perfection, containing a mixture of key pieces, as well as bespoke and new introductions – created especially for PDO; from the playful Ink Blot Ridley table lamp with black silk shade and champagne lining, to the highly-refined blackberry Cardinal table lamp, and an incredible bronzed nest of tables with antique mirror glass.

The gallery was a hub of activity, as I had arrived just in time for our ‘Meet Our Makers’ champagne brunch – held in association with The World of Interiors – providing guests with the opportunity to be further-educated by our own Porta Romana suppliers and specialists. The UK PR team was busy presenting key pieces in the enchanting ‘Cosmos Suite’ – designed using Satellite silk and Mineral Weave for the furniture and wallpaper fabrics, and our partners and agents from around the world were immersed in deep dialogue – all perfectly complemented with iconic 70’s David Bowie tracks, softly playing in the background – to further enhance the other-worldly experience.

The highlight for me, aside from the incredibly engaged and positive atmosphere throughout, was without doubt the Saturday night Porta Romana party, bringing everyone together to celebrate, but also to give me the chance to meet an array of fascinating people. It was electric – with something for everyone, whether it be to enjoy the champagne, canapés and Cosmos ‘Apothecary’ cocktails, great conversation or simply to explore the themed lava grey walls covered with early-stage sketches and mood-boards.
