Grange Park Opera House

Grange Park Opera is one of the major summer opera seasons in Europe. Founded in 1998 by Wasfi Kani CBE, it has staged more than 80 operas, including acclaimed productions of Rusalka, Tristan und Isolde, and Fiddler on the Roof with Bryn Terfel at the BBC Proms.

In 2017, Grange Park Opera relocated to West Horsley Place, Surrey — a heavenly, 350-acre estate with majestic woodland and formal gardens. Nestled at its heart is a five-tier opera house modelled on Milan’s La Scala and realised by Tim Ronalds Architects. Porta Romana has lit the auditorium since it opened in 2019. In 2026, we completed our most ambitious commission there yet: a bespoke, three-metre-wide chandelier, a fitting centrepiece to the impressive space.

Taking its cue from the kinetic lights at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, the sprawling chandelier suspends in the centre as the audience gathers, before lifting to the rafters as the curtain raises. In a subtle homage to the abundant nature surrounding Kani's “theatre in the woods”, our design and production teams worked flora and fauna themed details throughout, including dancing dragonflies amongst the foliage.

Adorning all five tiers of the surrounding balconies are 58 Porta Romana Beatrice wall lights. They alternate between two-arm and three-arm fittings, the latter being a custom design made especially for Grange Park Opera. Locally handmade in brass then finished with a decorative patina in our in-house painting studio, they’ve lit the opera house since it opened.

Our collaboration with Grange Park Opera extends beyond the auditorium. An Ivy Shadow mirror greets visitors in the eastern stairwell, whilst in the Treetop Studio, four custom Ivy Shadow wall lights and an Ivy Shadow chandelier continue the same botanical language.

It has been a pleasure to play a part in Kani’s vision for Grange Park Opera — a destination built on the same ambition and craft that drives our own workshops.
