Our Story

In a world where products are rarely made to last, we create objects to be loved for a lifetime and more. Inspired by the beauty in the natural world, we transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, with a design language that pushes boundaries through our use of innovative techniques and materials.

Founded in 1988 by Andrew and Sarah Hills, Porta Romana has continuously grown and evolved. From humble beginnings in a tiny London workshop, to creating a lighting installation for the Royal Academy of Art, we have designed iconic pieces for countless homes, galleries and hotels.

The craft & workshop

Since we first started, the painting studio has been central to our designs. It’s there that we’ve spent three decades building on the craft of hand painted finishes, developing our own unique library. Each patination takes weeks to develop, sampling layers of colour up and down from light to dark and back again, in search of the perfect and unique Porta Romana finish.

Made to order

At Porta Romana, every piece is an original. Whether you select from our designs, or customise your own, every piece we make is handmade for you. That means every little detail can be tailored to work with your interior – from fabrics and finishes, to creating something totally bespoke.
