British made

Local craftspeople are the heart of Porta Romana and we’re fortunate enough to work with exceptional makers from across the British Isles.

Every glassblower, ceramicist, metalworker and sculptor brings their expert knowledge to the fabrication of our designs and imprints each one with a unique character. In nurturing established and emerging British artisans, we are able to keep the majority of our production local.

In 2020, we collaborated with one of our key glass makers to develop the Vespa Lamp. Made for us in the Surrey Hills, it’s an extraordinary technical feat. Its distinctive, striped pattern is achieved by laying liquid glass onto the molten lamp body, and then mouth blowing the glass to achieve this spectacular and dynamic fusion of colour.

Meet the makers

By working closely with local makers and building personal relationships over years, we’re able to understand each part of their process first-hand. This means we can input at every stage of making, bridging the gap from sketch to finished product. At the same time, we are not bound to our initial plans, and allow the pieces to grow and evolve in the trusted hands of our makers. Collaboration is the key to everything we do at Porta Romana.
